Veterans on a Mission: Vic Szeligowski

In our Veterans on a Mission series, we’ll highlight the best and brightest veterans who have put their service-learned skills to work – and have helped us become one of G.I. Jobs’ Top Military Friendly Employers.

After seeing the positive impact AT&T has had on his wife, Vic Szeligowski knew AT&T would be the perfect place to grow a civilian career. Hear about his experience:

Branch of service:
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS (YUTTT)

Military Occupation Code (MOS):
I was 0602 - Communications (now Command & Control Systems) Officer

Current position at AT&T:
Lead Project Manager, AT&T Technology Development

How long have you been at AT&T?

I started with AT&T in March of 2016, about six weeks after separating from the Marine Corps.

What made you consider AT&T as a potential employer?

AT&T is instantly recognizable as a top-tier company in talent, global presence, and for what it delivers. For me, joining the Marine Corps was all about becoming part of an elite group that would challenge me while providing unmatched development opportunities. When it was time to transition out of uniform, I knew AT&T would provide that same level of professional and personal development even before talking to someone about coming aboard.

Were you referred to AT&T by an employee?

I was referred to AT&T by a few employees, which seems to be a testament to the company’s commitment to recruit veteran talent. One of those employees knew me quite well, in fact, as she is my wife! I had the pleasure of seeing her grow as a professional both before we were married and after, so it was an easy decision to explore opportunities at AT&T when others referred me to the company.

Are there any similarities between the military and AT&T that helped your transition to the company?

There are several comparisons that could be made between AT&T’s values and military values. The most significant observation I have made to date is the value and respect afforded to each individual member of our team. The strength of the work across our team truly seems to originate with the trust, mutual respect, and understanding of each individual and their talents. That is something that was emphasized every day in my military experience, but seems to come naturally among colleagues at AT&T.

How has your military experience been beneficial in your civilian job?

I cannot count the number of times for which I was thankful to have had an experience in uniform from which I could draw some type of knowledge or expertise. It is my opinion that military experience has more value and positive application in civilian life and corporate work than is typically recognized. I can certainly attest to the value of that experience when handling challenging situations professionally.

Do you think AT&T appreciates your military service?

I do think AT&T appreciates the time that was spent in uniform. From a transition perspective, the managers that did not have their own military experience seemed to appreciate its significance and treat it as an advantage to their team’s combined overall experience. They also made it a point to connect me with others that did have their own military experience, both during the transition and after, in order to not only feel welcomed and part of the greater community, but also to better understand the company, its people, and to enjoy an easy transition into corporate life.

How does AT&T provide an inclusive environment for veterans?

AT&T is very welcoming to veterans, and throughout my experience the company has gone to great lengths to foster an environment that allows this community to grow. On a personal level, my interactions on a daily basis have been nothing but positive when past experience is shared. I am very grateful to be working at a company that values such a positive environment for veterans in this way.

Would you recommend AT&T as an employer to other veterans?

I would recommend AT&T as an employer to other veterans without hesitation. I am not sure what the transition out of a uniform would have been like had I decided to begin a new career elsewhere, but I don’t imagine I could have had a better experience than the one that AT&T has given me.
