Together, at Home and at Work: an AT&T Military Story
Erin McGrath has been with AT&T for six years, starting as a Corporate Communications Intern and working toward her current role as our Media Relations Director. Her time with our company has been so positive, she even recommended her husband Vic Szeligowski launch his civilian career at AT&T after separating from the Marine Corps.
Hear why Erin thinks AT&T is the perfect employer for military spouses and veterans:
As a company, AT&T is consistently aware of and observing veterans, veteran hiring opportunities, Veterans Day, and veteran-aligned organizations. Just a few months ago, there was a USO Care Package day on our office floor where folks used their lunch breaks to donate and package necessities for military overseas. There was no special occasion, it was just that someone had taken the initiative to put it together, and employees cared enough to participate.
As a military spouse, simply seeing that take place showed me a tremendous amount of support. The veteran community is visible and active within the company, and helps to support and foster deeper relationships with coworkers. That understanding has been really healthy with veterans and non-vets alike.
The career support is superior, but what really makes a difference is the people that you work with along the way that help you get through difficult times and big changes.
From an even more personal standpoint, the support and general concern that my colleagues showed me while my husband Vic was deployed was sincere. I will never forget that.
Our team and leadership was aware of my husband’s deployment and the resulting life circumstances, and were able to be flexible with my schedule when needed. A week after Vic was home from deployment No. 2, I remember my leadership telling me to head home a bit early to spend more time with him. Little gestures such as that go a long way.
This respect and gratitude is what inspired me to encourage my husband to start a civilian career at AT&T.
It is easy to find comparable characteristics between AT&T’s culture and that of a healthy military unit. AT&T is a world-class company with exceptional talent. Since my husband was coming from an organization that prides itself on its people and their capabilities (the U.S. Marine Corps), AT&T was a great place to transition out of uniform and find a parallel sense of pride and belonging in daily work.
Also, the community that exists is very welcoming, both among veterans at the company specifically and for new hires in general. The career support is superior, but what really makes a difference is the people that you work with along the way that help you get through difficult times and big changes. And at AT&T, everyone that has been part of my path has been wonderful.
