Autism Awareness at AT&T
Did you know April is National Autism Awareness Month? Nearly 25 years ago, the Autism Society launched a nationwide effort to encourage community members to become partners in a movement toward acceptance and appreciation for the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.
There are many ways to show support, such as wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon or participating in various awareness events, but at AT&T, we’re celebrating by making an exciting announcement.
We’re a company in which every voice matters. We recognize and respect all differences and are committed to hiring a workforce that is as diverse as the communities we serve.
That’s why our Human Resources department is partnering with LaunchAbility, a job placement agency working with adults with cognitive disabilities, to pilot an internship program for adults with autism. The initial program will be a three-month summer internship, placing four interns in AT&T’s global headquarters’ HR department in downtown Dallas, Texas.
LaunchAbility will provide specialized hiring manager, supervisor and intern training in advance of the internship start date to help set everyone up for success. Then, when the employees officially start their positions, an ongoing LaunchAbility job coach will provide on-site support for the supervisors, departments and student interns.
Training through the program will help individuals learn what is appropriate in the workplace and provide tips on key career-focused tasks such as email etiquette and interview skills. The ultimate goal is to not only train and employ workers with autism, but to ensure they remain employed.
We are thrilled to roll out this pilot with LaunchAbility. We continue to make our technology accessible to more and more people with disabilities, and we work hard to recruit diverse, qualified candidates for all of our job openings. We’re proud of our long history of diversity and inclusion, knowing it’s made us a better company and much stronger competitor. At AT&T, every voice matters, every day.
